I adore spamano…but I feel that too few writers delve into the issue that both nations are strongly Catholic.

You know, anti-homosexuality, anti-premarital sex and all that.

This is actually really fertile grounds for a talented writer to explore the tension between love and guilt, desire and repression…

Being Spanish myself I felt the need to comment on this, because the widespread idea that Spain = Catholic = therefore ultra conservative and homophobic always makes me go

While it is true that 76% of Spain’s population self-identify as Catholic, statistics show that around 70% of people support gay marriage and adoption, which have been legal since 2005. Also, the age in consent is currently 13. Showing off your nipples in public might get you some stares depending on where you are but that’s about it (taking off your bra at the beach is a must), and as far as I know, even conservative people couldn’t care less about premarital sex.

Of course I can’t speak for Italy, but from my point of view it seems like things are more difficult over there.

But yeah, aside from that, I’m all for character development and deep internal conflict in fanfiction uwu

I feel like spamanofic is inundated with ~CATHOLIC ANGST~ tropes, rather than the flip side. Or maybe this is because all I used to read was the kink meme. But. There was so much Catholic angst.

Yeah, the km was overflowing with Catholic Angst back in 2009. It was a bit of a cultural shock.

Honestly, the most religious and devout person I know is my maternal grandma Antonia. Who is also a hardore Republican leftist and a supporter of GLBT rights. When she got married to my grandpa she was pregnant and the priest kept the secret for them. And all of this happened under Franco’s regime. Also, she doesn’t like a good 95% of the Church and is very critical of the Vatican.

But Spain’s history with the Church it’s complicated. It’s not weird to meet someone who is deeply religious and yet hates the Church, and nobody would find it weird.
